August 2003

Dear Brethren/Friends:

We are enjoying some very fine weather here in Malawi at the present time. It won't be long, though, until it will be extremely hot. Following that we will get the rains (?) for six months. I don't mind the rain, but I am not looking forward to the "hot" weather.

We are so thankful for all of you who sent money for the Bibles and songbooks. We have purchased them, and are now distributing them carefully to those we feel are in need. The people in the rural areas are the ones in need of help the most. They don't have much money and seldom do they get to town. They are very appreciative of any help they get. We knew that our brethren would come through with this need as you always do. We have the names of all the contributors but one, and that one we don't know who to thank. Anyway, whoever you are -- THANKS!

Since completing the big meetings in the rural areas, we are now just going to congregations on an individual basis. We don't let them know when we are coming, so we can see what the situation is really like. Sometimes we are pleasantly surprised, and sometimes disappointed, but that is the way it is. We are looking forward to meeting more of the individual congregations from week to week.

Our printing work is rather slow. It isn't that we don't have the material to print, it is that we don't have the supplies. Supplies (especially cartridges for my printer) are hard to find here, and extremely expensive. Right now I am having them sent from the states (thanks to Brenda Rutherford, who handles this for me). Even then they are not cheap. The demand for the printed page is overwhelming. The brethren are always asking me for tracts to hand out. I am considering other options of getting the job done, but so far I haven't been able to pursue it very far. So far, I have 12 tracts in Chichewa, the local language here. This is a good number, if only I could get them printed and into the hands of the people. We have to use mostly Chichewa tracts here, as English is not widely spoken as in some African countries. If I could get enough cartridges I can get the printing done. The cartridges cost $208 a piece, and postage is $45 from the states. That is still the cheapest price I can find. If several congregations or individuals would buy just one cartridge a month and pay the postage, we could get the job done. If you can help send your check to Crieve Hall and mark it for Malawi printing. Any help you can give will be appreciated.

Again, I am letting Lina present the activities of the month for you in her LINA'S LINES (check our bulletin board). I know you all will enjoy them. Thanks for your support and prayers. May God bless you all in your service to Him.

In Christ who saves,
Edwin Crookshank
